Dance Teq offers a variety of “drop-in” classes as well as registered sessions.
“Drop-in” classes are ongoing and do not require any registrations. The classes are generally not connected with each other which makes it possible for students to come in on any day and follow along.
Registered programs are continuous sessions that go on for six or eight weeks. Students must register for these programs ahead of time to secure a spot in class. Instruction will be progressive in format meaning that instructors will keep adding on to the material from the previous weeks. Registered classes focus more on dance terminology, positions, movement, or any other specific elements depending on the program. Please visit the “Registered Classes” page in the “Classes” section of the website.
The cost of the classes can be found on our Prices page. Classes can be bought as individual classes or class card packages which works out to a lower per class rate.
Our students are mature teenagers and adults of all ages.
All of the classes start with a warm-up, followed by centre-floor and cross-floor technique exercises, and choreographed sequences, which change from week to week.
Ballet Classes start at the barre and is followed by centre-floor and cross floor technique sections and jumps that allows for more movement.
If you are new to dance and not sure what level you are at, try one of our new Absolute Beginner Sessions.
If you have a little bit of dance experience start with Pre-beginner or Beginner 1 class. When you feel that you have improved to the extent that the class is not challenging anymore, try the next level up.
If you have 2 to 3 years of dance experience, try Beginner 2 or Elementary class.
If you have been taking classes more than once a week for 3 to 4 years or more, you might want to try an Intermediate class.
Advanced classes for dancers with extensive experience or for those pursuing dance professionally.
It varies so much from one person to the next that we have to leave the decision up to you. However, we do recommend that you stay at a particular level until you have reached some degree of mastery.
You will improve the most if you are doing at least 2-3 classes a week but you will still progress and get the benefits of physical exercise even if you are dancing once a week. It also depends on your goals and objectives and whether you are dancing just for fun or you want to accomplish a certain level of technique and prepare yourself for the next level. Please do not hesitate to discuss this with your dance instructor.
You do not need a membership to attend classes at Dance Teq. If you plan to come regularly – once a week or more – you will save money by getting a Class Card or Unlimited pass (see Prices).
It varies from week to week and class to class (8 to 40 people per class). Classes must have a minimum of 6 students to run.
If you don’t have dance attire, wear anything comfortable in which you can freely move and sweat. Wear comfortable clothing that facilitates movement. Students tend to wear leotards, or yoga pants and tanks, or tights.
In terms of footwear, if you’re trying a class for a first time, just wear socks. We do, however, encourage you to purchase canvas or leather ballet or jazz shoes if you decide to continue taking classes on a regular basis.
For intermediate and advanced levels, please ensure that you have appropriate shoes for the class: ballet shoes and / or pointe shoes.
Yes, the change rooms at the Dance Teq Centre have showers and cubbies available for your use.
There is (paid) street parking on the residential streets around the Dance Teq Centre.
You have to approach your instructor directly and ask them if you can set up a private lesson. Many of them are available for privates. You’ll need to ask the instructor for rates and availability.
Dance Teq has a 10 minute late policy. If you are more than 10 minutes late, please note, it is too late to take class.
If you are less than 10 minutes late, please wait until the exercise has finished, and the teacher will place you at the barre.
