Lourdes Hernandez was born in Havana, Cuba. She received her ballet training at the esteemed Cuban National Ballet School before being accepted to the Ballet Nacional de Cuba, where she danced for fifteen years, touring extensively through South America and Europe.
With the Ballet Nacional de Cuba, Lourdes had the pleasure of dancing an extensive classical repertoire, including Swan Lake, Giselle, Don Quixote, Coppelia, La fille mal gardée, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Les Sylphides, and sharing the stage with renowned Cuban dancers such as Alicia Alonso, Jorge Esquivel, Lazaro Carreño, Jose Zamorano, Loipa Araujo, Josefina Mendez, Jose Manuel Carreño, Carlos Acosta, Lorena Feijoo, Xiomara Reyes, and Lorna Feijoo.
Lourdes was a founding member of the revitalizing dance movement in Cuba, La Joven Guardia (The Young Guard) directed by Alicia Alonso’s daughter, Laura Alonso. With La Joven Guardia, Lourdes danced pas de deux and principal roles in La fille mal gardée, Les Sylphides, Le Grand Pas de Quatre and the Dying Swan. La Joven Guardia later became Cuba’s second most important company, Centro Pro-Danza de Cuba.
Lourdes performed as a guest artist with Teatro Bellini di Napoli, Italy, from 1993-1997, dancing the Merry Widow, Al Caballino Bianco, Scugnizza (the Street Urchin) and a suite of Westside Story under Artistic Director Tatto Russo. Lourdes and her husband immigrated to Canada shorty after, where she joined Ontario Ballet Theatre, touring and performing in Canada and the US.
Lourdes is a guest teacher at the Miami Dance Project Inc and ProBallet in Miami, Florida, and has taught with Dance Teq since 2004. Her classes are a reflection of the Cuban method and classical tradition, emphasizing the technical precision, musicality, style and execution and paying particular attention to the footwork. Lourdes creates a welcoming class environment and encourages her students to dance ‘in the moment.’
Lourdes is also a practicing Pilates instructor of fourteen years’ experience, and graduate of the prestigious Stott International Certification Center, Toronto. She currently practices at the Mindful Movement Centre in Yorkville.
